| Windy Conditions Cause Downed Powerlines and Fires |
Mon. May 10th 2010
On Saturday, April 8, 2010, Engine Company 4 was toned out for a small fire in the ditch along side Kings Hwy. (RT. 3) down the street from Bowie's Restaurant. Minutes after being toned out for that fire, Eng. Co. 4 was toned out again for a tree that was down across powerlines and a brush fire along side it. Brush 4 responded to the first small fire with 2 personnel. Engine 4 responded to the second fire and tree down with 2 personnel. Tnaker 4 responded to the second fire with driver only. Brush 4 had the first fire put out within minutes. Engine 4 arrived on scene at the second fire and requested that Brush 2 be put on the call as well. One large tree had fallen onto the power lines and snapped the electric pole, which fell into the east bound lane of Kings Hwy. (RT. 3) by Po Boys Seafood. Engine 4 took command and tried to keep the fire from spreading until Dominion Power arrived on scene to shut off the power lines. VA State Police and West. Co. Sheriffs Office assisted with traffic control. Eventually Brush 2 and Brush 4 were able to put out the fire before it spread too far. All apparatus went back in service. Dominion Power remained on scene still trying to turn the power off and fix the broken pole.
Thank You Brush 2, WCSO, and VSP for your assitance!
